Rescue and Rehabilitation
Our primary area of focus is providing for the rehabilitation of our native wildlife. Hotline volunteers answer calls regarding wildlife 24/7. More than 1,000 calls are received from our Western Kansas Region annually. We determine, following protocols, if the bird, mammal, or reptile is truly distressed or orphaned, and recommend a course of treatment. Sometimes x-rays or surgery are required which can be costly.
The wildlife patient is then transported to our rehabilitation location by volunteers or the kindness of the willing public. Care begins in a quiet, warm atmosphere. Our volunteers assist with daily medications, treatments, food preparation, feedings, cleaning and more! Please keep in mind, some orphans need around the clock feedings. Which means we have dedicated volunteers feeding and caring for animals through the night. As the rehabilitation progresses, the animals are moved outdoors to an enclosure for more exercise, a more natural habitat and eventual freedom.
Our rehabbers attend yearly training sessions to keep current on care-giving protocols. These protocols adhere to International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC) standards as well as federal and state permit requirements.
would you like an update on an animal?
Project Wildlife can have hundreds of animals at one time. If you’d like to follow up on an injured, sick or orphaned animal, please follow us on any of our social media sites. We try very hard to keep the public updated on the rehabilitation progress of animals in our care. Because of our work load, we can not always answer phone calls or texts about animals in our care. Please remember all of our work is completely volunteer based. We do not get paid for our time answering phone calls, treating animals and answering questions.
